There is this wonderful bonus accompanying my books. Because spelling errors are invisible to me one of the hidden sources of entertainment is how MS Word replaces my misspelled words with gems of laughter. It is like a treasure hunt.
Taken from the original back cover of Getting Ready to Learn, we have:
"The main point of this text is that our students are not ready to receive their education primarily because they have no idea how to learn. What has happened is our educational system has impressed emotionalism into our students and without a balance of other personality styles their effectiveness has greatly diminished.
This book is a collection of lecture notes and letters that started in 1985. The purpose of this document is to enlighten the new students how to learn. This book is partly taken from Section 2, Communications, of a book being written to get students ready to learn software by overcoming catastrophic problems in our educational system.
This problem became apparent around 1985 when, as a systems analyst, the additional responsibility of running the co-op program to choose candidates for employment, clearly showed students were not ready to learn, much less be part of a co-op program. There seemed to be a problem with the perspective of the students coming into the program. To investigate the problem the standard scheduled tests were reviewed. The outcome of these tests were alarming, and so thinking as a systems analyst, there was an outside investigation started to find the cause and possible solutions to this problem. When retiring to teach at Grand Valley State University in 2001, a brief test was used with the students to track this problem's progression. It seemed that the graduating students were now the teachers and they were propagating what they had learned. This exponential problem is now the basis on which to understand the difference between people in large cities like New York, Chicago, and most west coast cities compared to the rest of the nation. Today we can see different political parties having a completely different perspective for the future of our country. The same problem discovered when running the co-op program has now expanded into more students in college classes. The communication problems these students were suffering since 1985 and before have been injected into the rest of our country.
This problem is not just one thing. It is a collection of events starting before most of us were born and now infecting our current educators. If I told you the problem now it would be confusing for most and not fully understood. So, the best way to understand this problem is to read this book in its entirety.(2018)"
